President Obama's Final State of the Union Address.
On Tuesday, January 12, at 9pm, President Obama will give his final state of the Union Address to the Congress of the United States, and to the rest of the U.S. Government and all of the American People who are either present or tune in. The address will be carried on all major networks, on radio, and will stream online. Afterwards the speech will be posted to the internet for your reading or viewing. Links will be provided as they are posted.
Here is the official White House site for the State of the Union Address. Currently it previews the topics that the President plans to Address.
This is something that the Constitution requires of the president in Article II, Section 3 which reads, " He shall from time to time give to the Congress information of the state of the Union, and recommend to their consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient..."
Looking ahead, what do you hope the President talks about in his speech?
Looking back after viewing or reading the speech, what did you think? What did you admire? What did you dislike? What did you agree with? What did you oppose? What are your questions?
A separate handout will be provided for you to take notes and questions on as you view or listen to or read the speech. This discussion board allows you to bring up your points of support or contention with your peers. Also, as we head towards our Mock Congress simulation, you may find inspiration in the speech in challenges that the President makes to Congress. Take up one of his proposals. You write the bill...
This discussion will run from Monday, January 11 through Tuesday, January 19..
